The Plant

Jute is famously known as the "golden fibre" for its natural golden hue and silky shine.

Extracted from the bark of the white jute plant (Corchorus capsularis) and, to a lesser extent, the tossa jute plant (C. olitorius).
Thrives in tropical lowlands with high humidity (60%-90%).Requires minimal fertilisers and pesticides.
Grows rapidly in 120 days, typically between April/May and July/August.
Produces an impressive average of two tonnes of dry fibre per hectare.
One of the most cost-effective natural fibres.Second only to cotton in production volume and applications.

The Fibre

Jute fibre characteristics are long, soft, and shiny fibres ranging from 1 to 4 meters long with a diameter measuring between 17 and 20 microns.

Jute is composed of cellulose (a key plant fibre component) and lignin (a significant wood fibre component).
A remarkably adaptable material with multiple applications.
Fibres are separated through retting, typically done biologically due to its cost-effectiveness compared to chemical treatments.
Biological Retting Techniques - Stack, steep, or ribbon methods involve soaking bundled jute stems in water to ease fibre separation from the stem.
After retting, non-fibrous matter is carefully scraped away.
Valuable fibres are extracted from within the stem for further use.
